Swiss Red Cross knew about HIV in blood supply
In April 1985 the New York Blood Center warned the Swiss Red Cross that part of its blood shipments tested positive for HIV and the center destroyed the suspect units. The warning marked the first acknowledgment that AIDS virus was in Switzerland, yet for 12 months the Red Cross used and distributed untested blood. After May 1, 1986, AIDS screening became mandatory but recalled products were not promptly removed. Dr Alfred Hassig faces charges for permitting possibly infected blood use. An estimated 68 hemophiliacs were infected. 24 died, with 100 to 200 more contaminated via hospital transfusions. The probe shows slow Swiss response amid early global spread concerns.
