Shelter plans larger facility to aid Lawrence homeless
Lawrence plans a 125 bed shelter near the Douglas County Jail that will help housing the homeless but not end the need for more funding. City budget director Casey Toomay notes social service requests outweigh available dollars with about 530000 from tax funds and 315000 from liquor revenues to award. Shelter director Loring Henderson says the move is a volume issue and questions funding competition with other agencies. City commissioners approved a 100000 appropriation in March and Henderson seeks county support for 2012 and 2013 budgets. About two dozen agencies requested funding in 2013 with tight allocations in the Special Alcohol fund. A full list of recommendations will be released in the next several days.

Two Lawrence bills die as session ends in 2012
Lawmakers left two Lawrence aimed measures unresolved, one on congressional redistricting and one on religious freedom, as the 2012 session closed. The redistricting map would have moved Lawrence into the 1st District, facing Senate opposition and anti districting votes. The religious freedom bill, viewed as protecting faith over anti discrimination obligations, did not reach a Senate vote.
