U.S. 59 option narrowed for new freeway alignment
Kansas officials narrowed the U S 59 project to two alignments 300 feet east or one mile east with a 199 4 million price tag Both would cut fatality deaths by about 80 percent and injury crashes by 60 percent The 18 mile road has a 25 percent higher accident rate than similar Kansas routes and reports show 376 accidents with 193 injuries and one death from 1995 to 1999 Commissioners favor keeping closer to the existing highway but will send a letter to KDOT with the preferred option The choice could delay the project by a year and raise development and tax questions

Knight Glasscock team forms in bid for Kansas governor
Knight and Glasscock unveiled a joint ticket aiming to unite Republicans and Kansans across parties as they campaign for governor. Kerr indicated Kansans want a mix of cuts and taxes to protect education and social services, while Stovall’s gubernatorial run faded and ethics officials allowed shared campaign funds from the Stovall-Glasscock account.

Lawrence library seeks more funding from city
Flanders cites a 750 000 item circulation this year as an all time high while noting it lags a million items at Ames Town library. He says circulation reflects collection quality and cites a 2001 patron survey showing unhappiness with adult fiction and audiobook options. The library spends about 12 percent of its budget on materials vs a 15 percent standard and a 55 000 grant from Northeast Kansas Library Service. City commissioners heard the request and reconvene at City Hall for discussion.
