Kansas lawmakers face widespread potential conflicts study says
A watchdog report on Kansas lawmakers shows 32 percent sit on committees regulating their outside interests, 18 percent have financial ties to lobbying groups, and 15 percent earn income from a government agency. The 149 in office in 1998 include 125 House members and 40 senators. House Speaker Robin Jennison defends citizen legislature aspects while noting many hold outside jobs. Senate leader Tim Emert cites no systemic corruption, but acknowledges conflicts are likely among those with living outside revenue streams.
