William Phelps Thompson a 46 year old Wichita attorney with a banker like approach to finances was elected moderator of the United Presbyterian Church of the U S A at its annual assembly. He won on the second ballot with 459 votes to 350 for Sherman Skinner and seven for Montag. Thompson previously chaired the general council budget and finance committee and guided the church’s financial program at the 1964 Oklahoma City assembly. He was born in Beloit Kansas admitted to the bar in 1942 and served in the Army JAG corps including Pentagon duty and war crimes prosecutions in Japan before joining a Wichita firm in 1946. He has been a Presbyterian since 1930 serving as deacon and elder at First Presbyterian Church.

Sonic booms wake Lawrence residents at dawn
Lawrence residents were awakened by sonic booms from military aircraft maneuvering in the area. Some booms rattled sleepers as early as 5 a m and were expected to continue through the day. The Journal World had indicated the noise would precede military air maneuvers in the Kansas City region.

City trees damaged by winter kill in local parks
Park crews removed trees in the 2000 block of Massachusetts and the 2000 block of Tennessee and in South Park. Vernon Cooper reports the trees did not leaf out this spring due to winter kill. Chrysanthemums, roses, and some lawns were also affected. Two Dutch elm disease cases are suspected on public trees this year, with samples from these trees and one private tree sent to Kansas University for testing.
