The Meyers converted a 15,000 gallon dairy fish tank to raise Nile hybrid tilapia, producing 150 to 200 pounds weekly for two Kansas City areas. Harvest Fridays ship live fish to Asian 888 Market in Overland Park and Super Value Food in Kansas City.
At Cal Ann Farms in Basehor the two year old five pound tilapia named Casper repeatedly evaded harvest nets by lying on the bottom. The fish grew large enough to threaten smaller tank mates and now rests in a display tank as a docile local attraction. The Meyer family notes Casper’s intelligence and nearly petlike behavior delights visitors.
