City leaders approved a study for expanding west of Kansas Highway 10 to join Lawrence. The plan outlines service costs over 100 million and possible compulsory annexation to accelerate growth, with commissioners favoring westward expansion and stronger city boundaries along U.S. 40.
Douglas County District Judge Kay Huff will retire on July 8 according to a county news release. Huff hears felony criminal and major civil cases, presides over the Douglas County Drug Court since January 2020, and has a background as a private practitioner and clinical professor.
Lorene Rose Martins, 47, of Lawrence, faces two felonies for aggravated endangerment of a child and one misdemeanor for intimidating a witness after allegedly failing to report her husband Timothy Glen Martins 47, to police over a 2017 incident. Martins was convicted in May of multiple counts of aggravated indecent liberties with a child.
Douglas County Commission unanimously agrees to fund about 13.92 million dollars toward the South Lawrence Trafficway expansion with City of Lawrence to match roughly 10 percent of the 124 million cost. The package funds related projects and aims to move the project into construction pipeline for a potential 2024 start, amid environmental and local impact discussions.
