Iran could play new role in al Qaida after Osama death
Intelligence officials weigh Saif al Adel as interim al Qaida leader, noting his past as a founder who helped the 1998 U.S. embassy bombings but opposed 9 11. Al Adel, once under house arrest near Tehran, is among senior al Qaida figures who fled into Iran after the Afghanistan invasion.

North Lawrence fire leaves three residents safe at Maple St home
Three residents escaped a early Wednesday blaze at 785 Maple Street in North Lawrence as flames forced a defensive attack. Toni Marie Flint, 18, and her boyfriend Corey Warner, 20, said they woke to a scream and fled upstairs then downstairs to safety with their cars moved away. Firefighters, arriving after 911 calls, fought hot spots for about 30 minutes. Two dogs were lost, while two others survived. Investigators, not labeling the cause suspicious, estimated 77 thousand dollars in damage to the home, contents, and vehicles. The Red Cross assisted the residents with food and clothing.

Brownback backs Kansas engineering initiatives in 2011 session
Gov. Sam Brownback voiced support for bills to boost Kansas engineering graduates. One measure would allocate 10.5 million dollars yearly from gambling revenues to KU, KSU, and Wichita State, starting 2013 for ten years with nonstate matching funds, and routed via the Department of Commerce to emphasize job creation. Another bill would authorize KU to issue 65 million dollars in bonds for a 100000 square foot engineering building beside a 34600 square foot lab. The goal is to raise annual engineering graduates from 875 to 1365 by 2021.
