Airlines warned five months before 9 11 threat memo
The FAA memo dated April 18 2001 warned airlines that Middle Eastern terrorists might hijack or blow up a U S plane and urged high alertness. It noted four al Qaeda members on trial over the 1998 embassy bombings and followed other pre 9 11 alerts. The note expired July 31 and did not call for new security procedures.

WHO halts tinypox destruction plan for research use
World Health Assembly members reversed a 2002 deadline to destroy smallpox stocks held in the United States and Russia. The decision keeps samples for research into vaccines and treatments, with future destruction date to be set later. United States and Russia defended continued storage citing security and public health needs. The move aims to ensure access to findings for all WHO member nations and address fears of bioterrorism.
