Lawrence High sophomore Mike Connolly carries a 12-3 record into the Class 6A regional at Lawrence Tennis Center after a 7-5 loss to coach Dick Wedel and a runner-up finish at Sunflower League. Russell wins Big 12 javelin title with 247-7 record
KU junior Russell captured the Big 12 javelin crown and achieved a personal best 247-7, automatically qualifying for NCAAs and breaking both stadium and meet records. He trailed only by Vince Labosky in the national EU standings, despite a tougher discus day. Kansas finished 8th in the men’s team standings, with Nebraska leading and Baylor second. Candy Mason led KU women with a pole vault title and heptathlon, while Andrea Branson and Marc Romito added strong showings in vault events. The Jayhawks head to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Buffalo.
