Price declines press farmers shipping low valued crops
A Kansas State Board special inquiry reports rising shipping costs cut gross margins for farmers. Livestock shipments and hides show losses as freight rises from 6 to 10 percent of value, with many consignors receiving only small net returns. Examples include hides yielding 40 to 180 cents per head after costs, calf hides sold for 40 cents, and cattle shipments costing far more to move than the sale price.
