KDOT to spruce up old U.S. 59 and remove passing lane
The Kansas Department of Transportation plans to redevelop old U.S. Highway 59 into a minor collector road after the new four lane freeway opens between Lawrence and Ottawa. KDOT will fix bridges repave roads and replace guardrails while the county weighs removing a 0.6 mile southbound passing lane to save maintenance costs. A compromise includes adding 6-foot shoulders on both sides to aid slow machinery and passing. Work on the old highway is set to begin next year.

Son of 1989 murder victim seeks details from sheriff
Brian Torres, son of Nilsa Sanchez who was found strangled near Lawrence in 1989, says he has been frustrated by limited information from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office about the cold case. Undersheriff Steve Hornberger says evidence was recently sent to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation but offers few specifics noting that timing and testing could affect the case. The M Squad investigated, logging thousands of hours and hundreds of leads with no arrests, and it remains the county’s sole unsolved murder in recent decades. The KBI has not provided timelines for testing.
