Woman Persists. City Moves on Fourth and Maine Sewer Plan
After two years of effort, Mrs. Maxine Newman and neighbors near Fourth and Maine win tentative city commission approval for a storm sewer project costing about 34 500. The plan covers 18 24 and 36 inch pipe from Fourth and Maine to Minois then south to Winds Fifth and west to Fifth. The plan creates a benefit district funding half the cost with landowners paying about 202 to 242 per lot. The district includes Bert Nash Mental Health Center and Lawrence Memorial Hospital. The commission accepted low bids for pipe and ambulance van conversion amid objections to pipe type and timing.
