Philadelphia May 17 heavy balloting as Pennsylvanians vote in a primary that tests party control and power for John L. Lewis and the CIO. Frauds alleged in Philadelphia precincts while moved voters face registry transfer issues.
The Kansas Young Republican collegiate division holds its state convention at the University of Kansas this Saturday with eight Kansas colleges sending representatives. Blaine Grimes and Peggy Anne Landon spearheaded campus efforts, and John Fontron will be the principal speaker. Participating schools include Wichita University Kansas State College Baker University Washburn College K U Hays State College Pittsburg Teachers and Hutchinson Junior College.
Correio Da Manha published a Reichswart facsimile and tied the May 11 Brazilian greenshirt revolt to German Nazis. The paper printed a May 25 1934 letter by Gustavo Barroso, head of the greenshirt Integralists, signaling we await your offers. Dozens more Integralists and suspects were arrested in a nationwide roundup after the abortive uprising.
Perry Morrison of Arcadia California won first place in the national airmail essay contest sponsored by the post office department. Ellen Peak of Manhattan Kansas placed second and Homer Still Jr of Jacksonville Florida took third.
Mexico City May 17 The government continues to mass troops around San Luis Potosi amid rumors of revolt led by General Saturnino Cedillo. President Cardenas says there is no danger Cedillo will rise in arms, while violence at the University of Mexico leaves one dead and several injured. The senate backs Cardenas over the British oil expropriation dispute.
Japanese columns press toward Suchow central China rail junction as they encircle the city from north west and south west. Changching eight miles west, Japanese claim guns to be unlimbered within hours. Chinese say Lunghai rail line remains intact and Suchow held, while Taierhchwang Pihien forces retreat toward the junction. Payitsi, 28 miles east, sees pursuing troops.
The Kaw Valley Electric Cooperative sponsored by the Rural Electrification Administration signs Dan Scherrer of Kansas City for 190 miles of poles and lines at 133 120 81 dollars. Headquarters are in Topeka with work planned in Shawnee Jackson Douglas Osage and Wabaunsee counties. The project includes meters and overhead costs bringing Scherrer’s part to about 154 265 dollars. Construction start in Topeka reports unclear with progress tied to the number of users signed up and a power supply contract with Kansas Power and Light.
Sarah E Wetzel sues Maurice Austill and Kansas Electric Power Co. for 10186.81 stating Austill's driving caused injuries at the Massachusetts and Tenth Street intersection around 5 50 P M October 30 1937. She seeks 150 for medical bills 36 81 for hospital costs and 10000 for permanent injury and pain.
County commissioners meet as an equalization board to hear complaints from about 100 property owners over ten days. Hearings cover real and personal property assessments made by the assessors. Decisions will be announced after review.
An $80,000 Lockheed transport with nine aboard is feared crashed on the fog shrouded Sierra Madre peak near Los Angeles. Air and ground teams mobilized, including nearly two dozen planes, as weather ceilings hinder rescue efforts.
The Missouri Valley section of the Association of American Bacteriologists will hold its annual meeting in Lawrence next year. Kansas University was named host, with Dr. Cora M. Washington May 17 House naval committee members expressed belief they had shelved for this session legislation to authorize construction of a government radio station designed to offset Fascist and Communist broadcasts to Central and South America. The committee suspended hearings awaiting a report from a special interdepartmental committee, and some members predicted the measure would die.
Boston Bees shut out the Pirates 1 0 to extend their winning streak. McGee pitched one hit ball to beat the Dodgers 2 1 in Brooklyn. About 150 relief clients occupied the Cleveland city council chamber in a sit-down protest to press for regular relief orders. Mayor Burton urged patience as the council approved an 80 000 stop gap transfer from the general fund to cover relief costs while awaiting new state relief legislation.
Chicago officials and the Illinois emergency relief commission face a growing relief crisis as funds run short. Stations close tomorrow, 1500 of 1900 workers face layoffs, and a special legislative session may be needed to bridge a funding gap between monthly sales tax transfers and the 3.6 million needed. In Atlanta on May 17 the bodies of two men were recovered from fire burned ruins, raising the death toll to 28 with fears of more victims under debris. One identified as W. H. Snider of High Point North Carolina, father of a 13 year old who also died. Henry Jackson a hotel cook gave police his account of the blaze saying the exhaust pipe glowed red hot then flared, with no blast heard and no known arson.
The ROTC completes plans for the annual barbecue to be held tomorrow at 6 PM in Memorial Stadium. Col Karl F. Baldwin will announce the year’s awards after the parade at 4 30 PM. The parade is public. barbecue is invitational only.
Ogden Utah May 17 In one of the first crimes of its kind in American aviation history ban dits stole a five passenger cabin plane from Ogden Municipal airport Deputy Sheriff Earl Taylor reported. While a city watchman slept in the north hangar the culprits rolled out the craft filled it with gasoline warmed the engine and departed. Suspects Earl Gilbert 22 Fairview Idaho and Red Hall 22 Fairview being sought for questioning. The plane belonged to an Ogden flying service.
Washington lawmakers push a 3 billion relief and public works package. Hayden asks federal agencies to list projects usable within days of enactment. Ickes and Wallace back speedier starts, noting many can begin within 30 days. House backs wage hour bill. adjournment likely between June 10 and 15.
The 600 block on Massachusetts street began installing permanent white cement markers for auto parking spaces. Markers, five inches wide, three inches deep, 15 inches long, use cement with a white top coat and replace painted markers to save money. City workers produced about 600 so far. A marker sits about six feet from the curb, with a second at the end of the parking line.
Mrs. Harry Kane learns her brother Charles McCurdy has died after a period of illness at his San Diego house. A former Lawrence grocer, he left behind a wife, two children, four grandchildren, his sister Mrs. Kane and brother Taman McCurdy of San Diego.
The senate confirmed the nominations of Summerfield S. Alexander for United States attorney for the district of Kansas and Loan Warner for United States marshal for the same district. Both were reappointed.
Three of six convicts under death sentence for killing Olin Sanders escaped from the Richland county jail in Columbia South Carolina early today. They were part of a jailbreak attempt by penitentiary guards captain P. Sanders who helped frustrate a previous escape on December 12.
A civil suit in federal court accuses 91 individuals and firms of conspiring to loot investment trusts. Arthur A. Ballantine alleges $3.3 million was dissipated in five months. defendants include Paine, Webber & Company, Chase National Bank, National City Bank of NY, Westinghouse Electric, and several named individuals. The suit details liquidation of securities and proceeds as commanded by the vote and parties involved.
Heavy rains drenched the eastern third of the state with four to five inches above normal. Randolph recorded 4.35 inches and Minneapolis 3.10 inches in the last 24 hours. Hays 2.28, Russell 1.93, and Ellis 2.11 inches also noted. Temperatures will stay cool with highs 70 to 75 and lows 50 to 65 as rivers remain a concern.
Topeka May 17 Officials from northeastern Kansas cities gathered to discuss sales tax issues public works programs and other civic topics. The meeting opened the district series led by John G. Stutz executive director of the League of Kansas Municipalities. Other items include new utility accounting systems traffic regulations beer licensing and riding programs. District two includes southeastern counties and meets tomorrow at Iola.
The government farm program will be the subject of a debate in Concordia on Saturday between Simon Fishman a wheat farmer and Dan Casement a cattleman. Farm Bureau attendees will hear Casement attack the program while Fishman defends it.

The inaugural air mail flight will depart Lawrence airport at 12 minutes after noon Thursday with a full cargo bound for Kansas City. The return plane will stop in Osage City and Topeka for cachets before visiting Lawrence, delivering sacks from Baldwin and Eudora post offices. Postmaster Roger Williams will hand the sacks to the pilot as crowds gather to witness the historic departure amid a fresh 6-cent air mail stamp issue.
The national biennial convention of Young Republicans will meet in Kansas City June 10 and 11 with Henry A. Bubb announcing plans for the 1938 and 1940 campaigns and new officers. President Roosevelt asked Congress for additional appropriations totaling 70,672,407 for the treasury and 3,014,492 for the interior department.
