Lawrence annexation to aid proposed regional recreation complex
City commissioners approved annexing 146 acres at Sixth Street and the South Lawrence Trafficway to guide future development. The owner group led by Duane and Steve Schwada offered 50 acres to donate for a public private recreation complex for Kansas University, with officials stressing no water or sewer extensions are guaranteed if the project fails. Community members urged delay until costs and operations are clarified, while staff and the mayor emphasized development under city regulations and the site’s highway crossroads. A zoning request and a June 6 concept plan public meeting at Free State High School commons are planned, with timing yet to be finalized.
