Lawrence LMH names new chief executive officer
Lawrence Memorial Hospital appointed Gene Meyer as chief executive officer. Meyer stressed community needs, expansion plans in west Lawrence, and attracting patients from beyond city boundaries. He noted LMH will pursue up to 8 million for future projects and emphasized accountability, civic involvement, and staff engagement as key to remaining competitive amid Columbia Healthcare’s build plans in the area. Meyer, an avowed Jayhawk, will relocate with his wife as LMH expands and recruits new medical practices.

Senate blocks Daschle abortion plan amid split votes
The Senate rejects a Democrat abortion measure calling it too broad and allowing doctors to decide when health risks justify abortion. A rival GOP and House backed late stage ban with exceptions failed 72-28, while Daschle’s proposal would bar abortions after viability around 23 weeks except to save the mother's life or prevent grievous health harm.
