Tax on corporate dividends eyed to boost federal revenue

Washington May 16 The house waga and means committee approved a 10 percent withholding tax on corporate dividends to tax unreported personal dividend income. Estimated to raise about 1500 million yearly, the plan would require withholding from every stockholder dividend and remit to the treasury, with end of year tax owed to be paid in full. The measure, pushed by Representative Mille, follows attempts to raise revenue by broadening excise taxes and trimming various costs. President Truman indicated support for bills that generate new revenue.
