Truman Seeks To Break Deadlock In Coal Talks
President Truman asked John L. Lewis and coal operators to submit their deadlocked contract talks to arbitration. Lewis and ONeill agreed to decide by 6 30 p m EST. The two said their own efforts to settle had collapsed and further discussion was deemed useless. The strike deadline loomed as a 42 day idleness toll rose, with government mediators receding to a recess. If no agreement on an arbitrator, Truman would appoint one. A two point plan proposed an arbitrator and mines kept working, with plans to report back by 5 30 p m. The day featured White House talks attended by Labor Secretary Schwellenbach and McGrady. Major Orlando Epp, recently back from overseas, was placed on terminal leave at Fort Leavenworth on May 11 while visiting friends in Lawrence. He enlisted October 18, 1941, while a University student and Journal-World employee. He served as a company commander in the American First Army across France into Germany and was promoted to major last fall. Since V-E Day he worked in the Berlin personnel office, with two months as a Denmark liaison officer.

Two Killed Six Injured In Bomber Crash Near Fairfax
Pairfax California May 16 1971 two men died and six were critically injured when a four engine army bomber ran out of fuel and crashed three miles west of Fairfax near Hamilton Field.
