American destroyers under Rear Admiral Sims have arrived in British waters to aid the alliance against Germany. No ship names or numbers will be released, as Washington keeps details secret. The flotilla is the first U S contribution, with operations coordinated with British and French navies.
Topeka reports Clyde W. Pinney of Topeka will supervise in France the setup of British and French locomotives built in the United States. A neighborhood gathering Friday night at the Kanwaka school house will feature speakers including Hon. Walter E. Wilson former bank commissioner W O S Gearhart state highway engineer and Marcellus of the Portland Cement association who will show highway pictures and lecture. Attendees from the area are invited with women not specifically invited. after speeches a social cream and cakes will be served.

Alberry Peterson was arraigned yesterday in justice court on a larceny from the person charge. He allegedly took a watch from a brakeman in North Lawrence. His preliminary hearing was set for Saturday at 10 o'clock. He could not furnish $600 bail.
Henry Collings aged 68 died at his home near Lake View at 4 Welock yesterday afternoon after a short illness with pneumonia. He had long residence in Douglas county and many friends. Funeral arrangements will be announced later.
The fire escape on the Manuel training building is being altered this week after a state fire marshal inspection. Workers are lowering the escape floor from the second to the first floor level and will install a door where a window exit was previously used.
Irvin F. Beaumont, engineer on Santa Fe train No. 9, was instantly killed near the Wakarusa bridge west of Eudora when his head struck the bridge ironwork as he leaned out to watch a following train. His body was thrown from the cab. fireman assisted, and the funeral arrangements were set with Beaumont survived by a wife and three children.

Auto owners in Douglas county await the state automobile inspector for license tag enforcement. The inspector has not appeared yet this year but is anticipated by the county treasurer. Expired and misused License Applied For tags have disappeared and collections are expected to improve when the inspector arrives.
Three University of Wisconsin engineers accepted jobs announced this morning. Charles Sloan will take a hydraulics scholarship at Wisconsin. E Easterday joins St. Louis Public Service Commission in waterworks construction. J O Gunnels becomes resident engineer in water works construction for Veatch and Black, Kansas City firm.
