Kansas Judicial Selection Plan Fails Amid Debate

The Kansas Bar Association board unanimously opposed a plan to amend the state constitution to require Senate confirmation for governor appointments to the Supreme Court and Court of Appeals. Chief Justice Lawton Nuss accused Senator Jeff King of applying pressure. King denies the accusation and calls for an apology. The measure would shift the nine member nominating commission toward greater executive and lawyer control, prompting concerns about openness and independence. Supporters vow to push again next year while noting changes already enacted for the Court of Appeals.
