Lawrence hotel project expands parking garage and teases $4 million cap

Lawrence commissioners approve increasing the parking garage cap from 3.5 to about 4 million dollars as a hotel site grows from 89 to 103 spaces. The extra 500 thousand in tax increment financing will come from funds set aside for the northeast corner apartment project. Compton, leading the development, says the apartment project can better absorb lost TIF revenues due to its larger scale. The hotel project relied on the cap increase to stay viable, with TIF rebates issued only after approved work invoices. Construction is expected to take 15 months, and a portion of the nearby Social Service League Thrift Store may be rebuilt during the project.
