Doctors propose stricter blood pressure guidelines and two drug plan
A broad report in a special online edition of the Journal of the American Medical Association urges most high blood pressure patients to begin with at least two medications, and to try a diuretic first. Critics say the advice overgeneralizes and cite evidence that many patients respond to a single ACE inhibitor or beta blocker. The guidelines redefine normal and prehypertension, stressing the systolic number 140 or lower as key. They urge weight loss, exercise, reduced salt, and limiting alcohol to two drinks daily to curb rising pressures.
