Exhibit on Brown v. Board opens at Topeka site
A new National Historic Site in the former Monroe School in Topeka recreates the experiences of black students integrating American schools. Visitors will walk through a Tunnel of Courage as jeering crowds and menacing dogs surround them, while galleries recount the Brown v. Board of Education cases and other desegregation struggles. The $11.3 million exhibit honors Linda Brown’s broader story and the children of Oliver Brown, highlighting civil rights leaders and the five cases that overturned segregation.

Browns case reshapes civil rights beyond schools
Henderson emphasizes Brown was a milestone for African Americans seeking enfranchisement, not just Linda Browns bus ride. The piece traces 1950 NAACP actions, the Topeka suit, and social science influence on the Supreme Court decision, plus community ambivalence and ongoing desegregation struggles in Kansas.
