Ernest South, a 36 year old farmer, drowned after taking a dare to swim his horse across a 400 foot lake near Derby Kansas. The accident happened about 50 feet from the bank as the horse lunged and threw him. Despite swimming back toward shallow water he sank and could not be recovered until morning. He left a widow and one son Billie Lee.

Idabel Bank Robbers Captured After Gun Battle
In Idabel Oklahoma on May 14 two convicts escaped from Arkansas prison and robbed Idabel National Bank before a shootout with deputies. Rube McKean and Sam Day were captured. Day was wounded in the shoulder. Five thousand dollars was recovered. A physician said Day was not seriously hurt. The men used bank staff as shields as they fled and were disabled by gunfire across the street into a truck. The wounded companion was Day, McKean identified.

Miners clash with state police at Nottingham mine
