Rape case elicited scrutiny after large sentence cut
Victims and observers indict Douglas County DA and KU Law Project for Innocence after rapist Cory Elkins saw his 2008 sentence reduced from 48 years to 18 with a 2021 resentencing. Victims were not notified of hearings or the earlier release date, learning only via the Kansas Department of Corrections site. The change stemmed from misclassified burglary affecting criminal history.
