Los Angeles approves drought water use cutting ordinance

The Los Angeles city council passed a drought measure with no dissent to curb water use starting July 1. The rules ban inefficient practices, limit indoor outdoor watering hours, and require customers to use 90 percent of last year’s water. Violations may trigger shutoffs.

Tornado Returns Lost Check in Unlikely Twist of Fate

A May 4 tornado in southern Douglas County wrecked the Helfrich home and scattered belongings. A canceled check deposited in Lexington, 80 miles away, was mailed back to Helfrich by a Lexington teacher who found it in his front yard. Helfrich plans to rebuild and remains grateful for the unusual restitution.

Wellsville Restores Water After Tornado Outage

Water service in Wellsville returned to normal after replacing two valves and using stored water to boost pressure. City clerk Sheila Dominick said conservation is still urged as pumps from wells had fallen behind following last week’s tornado that damaged electrical lines and halted pumping. One well operates with a temporary pump while the main pump is repaired.

Douglas County health shows low death rates despite concerns over services

The Northeast Kansas Health Systems Agency reports Douglas County death rates from major illnesses are below Kansas and U.S. levels while a local survey finds only fair marks for hospital and physician care. Respondents numbered 167, with concerns about elder care and trash services. physician care rated better than hospital care.

Farm panel pushes crop price supports amid veto risk

The House Agriculture Committee backs farm legislation with up to 3.3 billion in crop price supports and a 2 billion Food for Peace renewal. Growth forecast into 1978 from Business Council meeting

About 100 leaders of large corporations forecast continued sound growth into 1978 with real GNP growth around 4.9 percent this year and 4.4 percent in early 1978. Unemployment should fall toward 6.5 percent by mid-1978 while consumer prices rise about 5.9 percent this year and inflation eases next year. Corporate profits up about 11 percent and nonresidential investment up 11.8 percent are projected amid concerns over Carter energy policy and tax changes.

Douglas County Employment Gains and Stable Unemployment Rate

Douglas County April data show total employment at 28 325, up 1 000 from a year earlier with farm plus 200 and non farm plus 800 jobs. Unemployed persons rose to 950 keeping the jobless rate at 3 2 percent. Government jobs to fall next summer by about 2 100 as schools trim staff.

Park the Site of Camporee

Members of all troops in Boy Scout Pelathe District will participate in a weekend event at Centennial Park. The Scouts begin setting up this evening with most activities on Saturday afternoon including contests exhibitions and pioneering projects. An estimated 75 Webelos will be graduated into Scouting in a campfire ceremony Saturday night. All Cub Scouts are invited to visit. The camporee ends early Sunday afternoon.
