Rehabilitation loans eyed to aid farmers long term
Washington reports Dr W W Alexander says 85 percent of families aided by the Resettlement Administration will be self supporting if the program lasts two or three more years. Wallace warns grants could end if drought ends in 1938. RA loans cost less per family than other relief. From 1935 to 1937 RA lent 127.39 million to about 500,000 families and gave 42.09 million in grants to 463,785 families. If funds are cut by a third, many rehabilitation efforts would end. Deputy administrator Baldwin says next year's RA appropriation will be partly offset by 30 to 35 million in loan repayments.
