Editorial: state cuts threaten public health funding
The editorial questions Gov. Brownback’s cuts to core government services, using the Kansas Arts Commission and the Lawrence-Douglas County Health Department as examples. It notes HIV and STD testing shifts from state to local funding, asks if public health is still a core state role, and warns of further erosion of services.

Lawrence endured a heavy electrical storm lasting nearly an hour with rain. Lightning struck the old Congregational church in North Lawrence, now a planing mill run by Walton and Young, demolishing part of its roof. The Kelley home near Number Six school had its roof torn off and plastering knocked down. The University power house stack was struck, making a large hole. No injuries were reported.

Dickens and the immigration debate in economic mirror
George Will argues that Dickens modernized economics over fatalism in A Christmas Carol, contrasting 19th century growth optimism with today’s pessimistic mood on immigration. He cites Heritage versus Cato on long term costs and benefits, dynamic scoring, and the role of immigration in growth, wages, and civic culture.

Rabies data dispute and wartime nuclear policy viewpoints
A letter to the editor questions rabies statistics from a Kansas State lab and defends a charity concert supporting Operation WildLife. It cites decade totals for species tested and positive results, arguing risk is misinterpreted. The letter also counters a comment on the Polaris display, arguing Truman’s decision avoided a broader war and saved lives, ending with a plea for historical perspective. The writer is Michael K. Kelly.
