The foreign ministers of the United States Britain and France meet to discuss expanding Western Germany’s authority and role within the alliance as part of postwar restructuring. Key talks focus on governance security and integration with European institutions.
In a London meeting dated May 17 1947 the United States Britain and France echoed plans to empower West Germany with limited diplomatic voice while keeping allied vetoes on sensitive controls. Talks covered pooling European heavy industry and strengthening defenses against Soviet expansion with focus on the Atlantic pact and postwar recovery.
Annual Spring tea for home demonstration unit members will be held Thursday at Plym Congregational Church 924 Vermont Street from two to four in the afternoon Hostesses will be the Home Economics Advisory committee The program centers on the theme Spring with details of refreshments and decorations provided by listed unit members and local volunteers.

Ten boys from eight Kansas high schools will enter the University of Kansas next fall as Summerfield scholars. The program, funded by Solon E. Summerfield's estate, covers the extra cost of a four year KU course and honors select students for scholarship, character and leadership. The ten winners include three from Wichita East High School: Hugh Kent Bowden, William Myers Carr and Donald Herbert McClelland, with eight others from towns like Maryville, Garnett, and McCracken.
Edward E Brass and James R Topping, sons of Lawrence families, received their lieutenant’s wings at Scott Air Force Base Illinois. Brass trained in Texas and completed basic training before multi engine training at Vance AFB Enid Oklahoma. Topping entered cadet program in 1943 but training paused by war end. he reapplied and began Texas training in May 1949 at Vance AFB for multi engine training.
George Lawrence a prominent local druggist and owner of Rankin's Drug Store was sworn in as a new member of the Lawrence Memorial Hospital board, succeeding B C Rankin who resigned recently. Dwight F. Metzler of the State Board of Health spoke to the 12 state school on slum clearance and related topics.
Surveys around Lawrence indicate elm trees may suffer little damage from canker worms in year. Professor Charles Michener of the E U entomology department cautions against unnecessary spraying and warns against indiscriminate use of DDT which could disrupt natural pest controls.
Three Douglas county members will attend the first Preparedness meeting in Topeka and two more hearings follow in Salina and Hayes. The programs cover improving treatment facilities and financial aid for polio patients, recruiting workers, and alerting officials to potential cases. Basil Green, the contractor, said four bricklayers five cement finishers ten plasterers and two foremen will return to work, ending a sympathy strike tied to Kansas City and Topeka union pressure. Officials doubt completion by fall due to the delay and unfinished finish work.

Five Liberty Memorial high school juniors were selected as delegates to Sunflower Boys State in Wichita June 1 at Wichita North High School. The group includes Stanton Ball Alden Brownlee Louis Phillips Dean Pontius and Tommy Ryther with alternates Jack Elvig Leon Mason. Delegates were chosen by the history department for scholarship leadership and character and will report to sponsoring groups Jaycees Rotary Kiwanis Fate jows lodge after the event. Girls delegates to Girls State were announced earlier with Sally Liz Jeanne Spearman Susanna Jimon and Mary Alice Hesrell.
Hibbs of Philadelphia will be the main speaker at a Kansan Board Dinner at Memorial Union. He attended a noon luncheon hosted by Chancellor Deane W. Malott of Kansas University and visited campus and downtown. Awards for the Henry Schott memorial prize and other citations will be presented during the dinner.
