Two Boys In Fatal Quarrel Involving Prominent Families
May 12 reports from Moberly Missouri of a fatal quarrel in which Charles Merno aged about 18 shot Water Haeger aged 21. Haeger died in the arms of Terrill’s daughter who had just become engaged. Merno surrendered and claimed Haeger had threatened to kill him. Both families are prominent.

Treasury official says tariff bill will yield sufficient revenue
Washington May 12 Assistant Secretary Howell of the treasury department says there can be no doubt the tariff bill reported to the senate will yield sufficient revenue. He notes total revenue may be less than estimates under house schedules but offsets include 10,000,000 from tea duty and 15,000,000 from higher beer tax. He doubts opium duty will raise revenue and suggests a 6 per pound rate may be too low to curb smuggling.
