Most Subsidies Go To Wheat Growers
In 1972, 540 federal farm subsidies of 20 000 or more to Kansas farmers largely favored wheat and feed grain growers across 20 western counties. Stanton County producers near Garden City and Liberal earned just over 1.5 million for reducing crops or following conservation programs, while Sherman County farmers via Goodland received about 1.25 million. The data, for subsidies above 20 000, appears in the Congressional Record after Rep. Paul Findley criticized them as welfare for the wealthy.
