Aerial espionage flights traced to 1948, Cannon says

Rep. Clarence Cannon told Congress espionage flights over Soviet territory have occurred for years, with the May 1 capture plane apparently downed by a defect rather than a missile. He noted penetrations as deep as 1,300 miles, defended with subcommittee support, and dismissed Khrushchev's invulnerability claims.

Odessa Realtor Raymond Crews 64 dies in Kansas City

Raymond Crews 64 of Odessa a realtor and insurance agent died Sunday in Research Hospital Kansas City after a two week stay. He was past president of the Central Missouri Real Estate Board and survived by his wife Ma bel and nine grandchildren. Services 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at First Methodist Church with burial in Odessa. Survivors include three daughters four sons two sisters a brother and other relatives. Separately A H Lathrop 83 died in Colorado Springs. funeral and burial planned there.

Mitchell 64 dies. longtime Tonganoxie resident

Leon Ro rt Mitchell 64 of Tonganoxie died Monday night at home. He was a former lumber company manager and president of the Tonganoxie Building and Loan Assoc. Funeral services Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at the Christian Church in Tonganoxie with Rev. Ralph Erwin. graveside services 1:45 p.m. at Sheron Cemetery in Drexel Missouri. Survivors include his widow Eva, daughter Mrs Maurice Black Jr Linwood, sister Mrs Violet Frank, brothers Charles A Mitchell and Roger Q Mitchell, and two grandchildren. He was a World War I veteran and member of the Christian Church and Henri Masonic Lodge 190 AF&AM. Quisenberry Funeral Home handling arrangements.

Triton Submarine Completes Long Undersea Voyage

Captain DeWitt Beach reported the atomic powered Triton finished an 84 day undersea mission with an average speed of 18 knots and a return to New London. Fresh fruit lasted three weeks while potatoes fed the crew for 70 days. Morale dipped slightly near the end as the shakedown cruise neared completion.

Lawrence events mix lecture tours and campus expansion

Lawrence hosts a mother baby care class at Memorial Hospital with Dr. Helen Gilles from 7 to 9 p m on Wednesday, the final lecture in the series. Merchants police begin operation with one patrol car and plan a second tonight as more merchants sign up. Haskell Institute starts the Student Union Center building costing 250000 aimed at dorm space and classrooms with completion hoped by September 1961. KU moves Sev Kell dorms to Oread Hall and may build new dorms and classroom space this summer with a 750000 256 person dormitory if funds are provided. Memorial Stadium expansion plans draw attention as financing remains the key hurdle with several meetings planned.

West Virginia primary races draw heavy turnout amid rain

Democrats in West Virginia vote for either John F Kennedy or Hubert H Humphrey as polls open. Balloting starts 6:30 am EST and runs to 7:30 pm with hand counting in most counties and few voting machines. Both candidates expect a long wait for results.

Wolfe to Remain School Chief Through August 1962

The Lawrence Board of Education extended W. D. Wolfe’s contract as superintendent to August 1, 1962. The board re elected staff and teachers, approved plans for Lawrence High additions, and set bids for new buildings. The district plans an early fall opening with adjustments to the calendar and staff meetings to benefit Lawrence students.

Burglary at Knowles Little Banquet and Safeway

Police reported no new clues in the Sunday burglary at Knowles Little Banquet in Malle Shopping Center. Entry was gained by breaking the front door and the safe was punched open stealing 540.51 in small bills and change. thieves also entered Safeway Supermarket the same morning but did not open the safe and took cigarettes.

Dillon Request Blocked By Group in Manhattan

The J. H. Dillon & Sons Co. had a zoning permit denied by the City Planning Commission. They sought to build a $275 000 supermarket in Manhattan on the same street as their existing store, about 12 blocks away, on land zoned for two family dwellings.
