Seventeen people are confirmed dead across three states after floods swelled headline making rainfall in southeastern Nebraska and adjacent areas. Emergency crews continue search and rescue as floodwaters recede slowly.
Seventeen people dead or missing after severe floods hit Nebraska North Dakota Minnesota and Manitoba. Rivers and streams rose rapidly wrecking towns, isolating DeWitt Nebraska and forcing residents to flee flooded homes as emergency crews search for others.
May 10 Topeka reports continued rain and thundershowers across southeast Kansas with lighter moisture elsewhere. Temperatures range from the 30s to mid 60s, with crests forecast above bankfull on several rivers including the Big Blue and Republican. Local rainfall tallies and river crests noted as storms move through the region.
Washington May 10 The weather and insect plague reduced the May 1 forecast for winter wheat to 685 595 000 bushels from 763 530 000 last month. Dry weather and green bug infestations mainly in the southern Great Plains depress the crop. If spring wheat reaches 265 000 000 bushels total wheat would be 954 595 000. Carryover now forecast at 450 000 000 bushels from previous year supports supplies.

Baldwin Kansas May 11 The Alpha Delta Sigma executive committee announces 12 Baker University seniors from a class of 123 will join the honorary scholastic fraternity. Initiation will occur on Alumni Day at the college Saturday June. President Truman's presidential train will travel eastward to Chicago for a May speech as firemen and enginemen threaten a strike. David H. Robertson of the Brotherhood says orders have been issued to ensure the train moves safely and without interruption despite labor tensions.
Ben Downa Hall 17 year old Liberty Memorial high school senior won the Summerfield scholarship at the University of Kansas for next year. He is the son of Dr and Mrs E Rodsall of West Ninth Street. The announcement came at a teachers assembly. Hall was among five from his school who took exams in March and April. The scholarship covers up to full living expenses and fees for four years. Hall, born in Berkeley, Calif, moved to Lawrence in seventh grade and participated in football basketball and track. The Douglas County home economics advisory committee will meet Friday at 10 in the county home demonstration agent office.
A walkout by firefighters on the Santa Fe and three other railroads idled the Lawrence Santa Fe yard while firms served by the line shifted to trucks. Office workers remained at the station as yard activity stopped. a few inbound cars waited under watch.
Working drawings are underway for the University of Kane fieldhouse planned as a 16 000 seat facility to be built west of the Military Science building. Kansas state architect Charles Marehall leads the project with a target completion by fall. the arena will include a See mile indoor track and potential future gym expansion.
