A Kansas governor ordered cavalry and infantry to disperse about 1,000 unemployed demonstrators in Payne's pasture west of Wichita. Police arrested 15 to 20 suspected leaders as guardsmen were mobilized to deter further riots.
The Kansas forecast calls for generally fair conditions tonight and Friday with cooler readings in the south and extreme east. Morning conditions show cloudy skies with some clear spells at Manhattan and Pittsburg. Road conditions: dirt roads mostly good with mud at Manhattan and Emporia and fair at Arkansas City. Douglas County reports good conditions. Temperatures recorded include yesterday’s highs and today’s lows with rainfall through 7 am noted as one inch.
The London press predicts Europe will not repay wartime debts to the United States. The London Express says Roosevelt knows this country will not pay more war debts. In Washington, the U.S. informs debtor nations token payments may be offered on June 19 but Johnson Act protections remain in force.
Washington May 10 The US Department of Agriculture reports a 13 million bushel drop in the winter wheat crop due to drought. The 1934 crop is estimated at 461.471 million bushels with 70.9 percent condition, far below the ten year average, as moisture remains scarce across the northern central and western states. Seeding halts and blown-out seed survive, with yields likely near recent lows.
In Columbus on May 10 AP reports suspicious figures near the Ohio governor’s mansion. A high powered rifle gleamed from a garage window while Gov George White and his daughter Mary arrived under guard after kidnapping notes demanded the release of Dillinger gangsters. Akron and Cleveland police were warned of possible mobster leads in town.
Proprietors of commercial printing houses in Douglas county met at the Channel of Commerce to discuss the Graphic Arts Code price schedule. The schedule from the National Graphic Arts Coordinating Committee fixes minimum charges for stationery envelopes handbills blotters tickets placards store sale bills and small booklets.
Chicago May 10 AP Samual Insull was denied a reduction of the $200000 bond set by Judge Will M Sparks in the Cook County jail case for mail fraud and bankruptcy act violations. The hearing stressed large sums involved and the need for Insull to be present at trials while his attorney and son discussed securing funds. Officials announced no police personnel changes with the upcoming new chief and Owen services were scheduled later Friday.
Topeka May 10 AP Cool northwest winds moved into Kansas easing a state heat spell that lasted three days. Rain totals were led by S D Flora with 1.78 inches at Osage City and 1.75 at Lincoln. Western Kansas saw up to 2.0 inches in Liberal and Hays while Liberal’s rain dampened last week’s dry area. Flora forecast 40s and freezing near by points, with temperatures rising to upper sixties tomorrow in most areas.
New York led by Lou Gehrig blasted the Chicago White Sox 13 to 5 in the AL opener. Gehrig hit his fifth and sixth homers along with a double as the Yankees built a big lead, while Goose Goslin contributed a key homer for Detroit in a 4-3 win over the Tigers. The National League action saw Cincinnati, St Louis, and Boston secure wins with notable pitching and offense.
The index average of ten stocks stood at 70.8, down from yesterday’s 75.5 as traders noted a broad pullback in early trading and small cap movements weighed on the broader screen.
In New York on May 10 AP reports three gunmen stole Bartley Gallagher's truck carrying $20,000 worth of chewing gum, 2,000,000 sticks. The driver was kidnaped then released unharmed as police puzzled over the motive cited by the robbers that the gum is for the cops to worry about.
A Lawrence community meeting outlined a subscribed budget of about 500 dollars to operate the Twilight League this summer. They rejected financing by game day collections and aim to secure funds before play starts. The 1933 report showed 427.42 in collections with 21.89 balance. Los Angeles May 10 AP The sudden marriage of R Dapper Dan Dowling to the kidnapping complainant Mrs Marjorie Crawford Wellman unsettles legal officials. Judge Fletcher Bowron weighs dismissing the charge amid Wellman’s claim of being coerced into a Yuma trip. Dowling pleaded not guilty at arraignment and announced the nuptials a week ago. District attorney Byron Fitts condemns the stunt as a humiliating publicity scheme and urges dismissal. Judge Bowron will rule later today.
Harold C. Fisher announced the graduation list of about 150 students from Douglas County rural eight month schools. Exercises will be held June 9 at Lawrence Memorial High School. Nine month school graduates will be announced after exams this week.

Eight tank cars of gasoline and a caboose of a northbound Missouri Kansas Texas freight train burned at Noxie Oklahoma last night. Two crewmen from Parsons Kansas were slightly burned while escaping the caboose and were treated at Katy employe hospital. Officials expected the main line to be cleared by today noon.
