A morning blaze at 6:45 damaged the residence owned by Clarkson Rogers at 1800 Tennessee Street. A defective fire attended by a tinware fire started the roof burned partially and its contents soaked. Property loss estimated between 200 and 800 dollars.
Attendees at a federation of women's clubs reception at AA hall last evening. Betas were beaten by the Sigmas Chi 13 to 9 on McCook field yesterday afternoon. Wednesday afternoon’s session of the State Federation of Women’s Clubs drew a large audience at Haskell Institute. Miss Daisy Hoffman spoke on kindergarten influence, Mrs John Troutman sang, and papers on civic culture, solar settlement, and art were presented by Kansas educators. The program closed with music and a visit to the institute.
Workmen excavating at the Selig building site near the new post office uncovered decomposed paper and rusted parts of an old printing press. The Herald of Freedom office owned by John Brown once stood on this spot, destroyed in 1856 by order of the U.S. marshal. Pieces of the press and charred paper were removed by curious locals.
A L Selig is adding a new extension on the east side of his building across the street from the post office. He will move into the top rooms above the offices once the addition is finished.

In St Petersburg on May 10 the new Russian parliament convened with a conciliatory throne speech. Czar calls for peasant relief and cooperation to modernize Russia and ensure unity and prosperity for the empire. Processions, crowds, and heavy guard presence marked the opening. Religious services preceded the ceremonies as the Tauride palace awaited the assembly.

Chas Titos of the YMO A in El Paso and parents arrive from Topeka for a visit with Laurenss. Morphy, grand patron of the OXS, attends annual vesting of the order. Augusta Dewey of Topeka and Arthur T Holbrook of Kansas City marry June 12. Edward Edson and son visit Kansas City. Mrs Bart Welch and daughter go to Tulsa, Okla. Dr W H Bayden arrives from Youngstown for a visit with his sister. Freda Barteldes returns from Oklahoma City to spend summer in Lawrence. Mr and Mrs A Henesa visit Mrs Hepson’s mother Mrs Menger on Connecticut. Mrs Bow Hale and Mrs S M Baker visit in DeSoto. Mr and Mrs Barclay Thomas of Hesper, recently back from Texas, spend day in Lawrence.
Topeka May 10 Attorney General Coleman announced he will go after Mayor Rose of Kansas City Kansas saying there will be no compromise and that they should settle the issue now to know what to expect. Coleman urged fighting this matter out right away.
Governor Hoch defended his administration's handling of the M. E. and T. Railway land case filed in the U S Supreme Court. He said no act of his administration will withstand closer public scrutiny than the Katyland matter and asserted he acted rightly.
A Cincinnati to Portsmouth Chespeak and Ohio limited train wrecked near Buena Vista station in May. The sleeper was ditched and sixteen passengers were aboard, four women injured. Investigating officials cite a broken rail as the cause.
The annual Sigma Chi province convention began in Lincoln as representatives from the University of Kansas Nebraska Iowa and Washington State St Louis and alumni chapters in Kansas City St Louis and Denver attended the meeting.

Mary Creel aged 36 died yesterday of consumption at her mother's home on Vetr Lou se Star Street. The funeral will be held tomorrow from the family residence with interment in Pleasant Grove Cemetery. Community notices report a somber farewell for a local resident.
