Justice Department launches Internet fraud reporting site

The Justice Department and FBI launched a Wide World Web site to report suspected Internet frauds. Janet Reno cited the need for new tools like the Internet Fraud Complaint Center to assist older Americans with assets and to route complaints to federal, state, local or foreign agencies. The center will analyze complaints, compile statistics and help craft enforcement strategies.

Cameras to televise Nichols pre trial hearings in murder case

Oklahoma City judge rules cameras may cover the pre trial hearings of Terry Nichols in the federal murder case linked to the 1995 bombing. Judge Murphy calls the old ban unconstitutional and says the open courtroom benefits the public's right to attend and cover proceedings. A separate note confirms a $2 million donation to the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery by Paul Peck to fund a presidency themed multimedia program and a named space after renovations in 2003.

Cardinal O'Connor laid to rest at St Patrick's Cathedral

Cardinal John O'Connor was buried beneath the cathedral altar after a Mass attended by President Clinton and other dignitaries. Law praised his pro life legacy while Sodano urged celebration of his call to faith as mourners filled the heatwave day. The Cardinal's coffin was interred beside Saint Pierre Toussaint in the crypt.

Navy resumes Vieques bombing drills on island

U S Navy warplanes resumed dummy bombing on Vieques in Puerto Rico after protests prompted a brief removal of demonstrators. Two A 4 Skyhawks dropped six 25 pound MK 76 bombs each as part of a certification process for range personnel before Atlantic fleet use.
