In Patras Missouri on May 9 Mrs Kate Rose Varnell killed herself with her brother's revolver in a scene tied to the Rose Norris tragedy. The sole witness was her niece. Earlier Norris was fatally shot by Daniel Rose after Norris found in Kate Rose's bedroom. Rose was not indicted. Kate Rose later married Varnell of St. Louis.
New York May 9 The Herald notes Porto Rico junta reports uprisings in Juniens and Bulawar with 70,000 expected to join the fleet against Spain. Secretary Robert H. Todd says natives seek independence but merchants favor renewal of ties with the United States.
