Ken Weaver wrote for National Geographic for over three decades

Ken Weaver, 90, a Lawrence Presbyterian Manor resident, built a career as a National Geographic writer and science editor, shaping the magazine from its early days through the space age. Born to a poor New Mexico preacher, he left McPherson College in 1933 amid the Great Depression to pursue journalism and science storytelling.

Art in the Park Draws Lawrence Artists and Vendors

Gray skies could not dim Lawrence's 45th annual Art in the Park as South Park sidewalks hosted over 100 vendors from the region. Jenny Gadzia praised her jewelry booth while the Lawrence Art Guild organized slides, fees, arrivals, and the day’s art contest, marking the guild’s largest single‑day fundraiser and the city’s biggest art event. Across Massachusetts Street, locals with dogs staged a Frisbee fetch competition with emcee, scores, and theme music.

Young chess teams chase national prominence in Kansas

Southwest Junior High School won the high school title at the Kansas State Invitational Chess Tournament in March. Quail Run School captured the elementary title with Alan Shi of Quail Run going 8-0 to be named individual state champion. Quail Run’s program has multiple state titles, while Southwest also earned a 2004 state title and strong showings in 2005. Coach Brad Johnson says the goal is to be the nation’s best.
