Plane Crash Kills Six In Utah Mountains

Six passengers died when a plane crashed and burned in southwestern Utah. Rescue teams worked through debris and planned a return with FAA investigators. Also, about 18,000 Oregon state workers went on strike after failed contract talks, with health care clerical and highway crews among those walking off. Public safety staff were barred from striking. A separate arson fire on a three story building caused three children and an adult to die. Investigators suspect an accelerant, possibly gasoline, was used. No arrests yet.

New disposal method may render mustard gas harmless

Aberdeen scientists report a hot water and sewage sludge mix can degrade mustard agent more safely than incineration. The $45 million study tests bacteria feeding on the chemical, with plans to scale from a pint to gallons and to also tackle VX. If scalable, 30,000 tons of 50 year old mustard stored at Aberdeen Proving Ground could be processed along with other state stockpiles. The method faces public safety concerns near densely populated areas.
