Bank-Wrecking Derby Bets Sink Midway Bank in 1927
Midway Kentucky faced a bank moratorium after heavy Derby wagering on Rolled Stockings, who finished ninth in a field of twelve. Town deposits collapsed as bettors failed to open the bank doors the following Monday. The piece notes past Derby eras with all horses winning money on the same day. It ends with a nod to medieval era royal figures and a closing line about Mondays and pirates.
