Riverside Elementary to shift to single grade classrooms
Riverside Elementary will move from a multiage program to distinct kindergarten, first, fourth, fifth, and sixth grade classes while keeping second and third graders in a multiage setting. The change follows a staff deliberation begun last fall with updates to the PTO and site council, and a parent letter is to be sent next week after a staff retreat.

Manslaughter suspect gets new attorney
The man facing a second trial on his 1996 manslaughter conviction has a new attorney. William F Garcia is charged in Douglas County District Court with attempted involuntary manslaughter criminal possession of a firearm and aggravated assault linked to a March 1996 gang related shooting in Lawrence. The Kansas Court of Appeals reversed the manslaughter conviction in September sending it back for retrial. District Judge Michael Malone appointed Shelley Bock to replace court appointed attorney Richard Krogh after Krogh said he could not represent Garcia in the retrial. A hearing was scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
