Mayfield aims to edge near top in NASCAR standings
Ken tuckian Jeremy Mayfield sits atop the Winston Cup points chase after a runner-up finish in the California 500. The 28-year-old says a rivalry could boost the sport but he plans to focus on road-course improvement at Sonoma and learn from Rusty Wallace as the two drive for wins.

Shorter Indy 500 practice slate pleases many drivers
Indy 500 practice shrinks to eight days as Speedway officials cut buildup to save money. Drivers like Scott Goodyear and Scott Sharp express mixed feelings, noting open testing and private tire runs already shortened the gap. IRL aims for higher pace and fewer crashes with the condensed schedule, while weather remains a potential factor before qualifying.

Gordon's extinct trophy car stirs NASCAR rule clash
The Monte Carlo nicknamed T Rex, sponsored by Universal Studios, faced NASCAR scrutiny after Hendrick Motorsports used a dinosaur-themed chassis in a non points race at Charlotte. Ray Evernham says the rule change cost the team a year in its chassis program and forced use of older cars early in 1998 season. Gordon, defending Winston Cup champion, has two wins in ten races and sits third in points.
