Small town helping habit challenged by study

Oklahoma researchers report small towns show greater altruism toward neutral recipients but are less tolerant of deviance. In an experiment in Tulsa and 51 nearby towns they mailed 216 letters and found higher returns from small towns overall, though letters to a leftist or communist target drew minimal responses. The FBI was alerted by letters sent to a fictitious friend of communism.

Amison wins local education award for breaking gender stereotypes

Pinckney School teacher Willie Amison received the Vicki Larson Landman Memorial Award at the Lawrence Education Assn. dinner for his efforts to reduce sex role stereotyping in the classroom. The surprise $100 prize honors Ms. Landman, a Baldwin teacher who studied stereotype issues before her 1973 death. Amison, with KU degrees, says he aims to help students discuss concerns and pursue their own interests.

Reuter Organ Co Plans Open House in Lawrence

Reuter Organ Co announces a public open house from 2 to 5 p.m. on May 23 at 612 N.H. in Lawrence with factory tours and continuous organ performances. Visitors can view the Organ Pipe Department and a console for a Bethany College instrument. The event marks the firm’s 60th year, showcasing a new product and a restored 100-year-old organ.

Congress sets high 1977 budget with job programs

Congress advances a 1977 budget of 413.3 billion avoiding major payroll tax rise. The plan boosts defense to 100.8 billion and targets 158.9 billion for unemployment, Social Security and welfare programs. It promises about one million more jobs in 1977 and lowers unemployment to 6 percent by year end.

Durable United Fund directors recall 1956 meeting

A citizen revisits the original United Fund board elected July 27 1956 noting ten Lawrence residents among the twelve directors still living. Names include Russ Mosser George Noland James Schubert and others while M C Slough Chester Jones moved away. Also report of Steven Gaedtke 20 Gardner injured in a single car crash near the Eudora blacktop. He is in fair condition at Lawrence Memorial Hospital with back injuries and arm cuts. Sheriff notes crash occurred about 11 15 p m near U S 56 with few details available.

Mishap and scuffle lead to multiple arrests in Lawrence

Lawrence police arrested Henry Parra 20 Kansas City Kan on charges of driving while intoxicated leaving the scene reckless driving and illegal possession of marijuana after a two car crash near Second and Lincoln in North Lawrence. A bag of green vegetation reportedly was found in his car. He is free on 1350 bond. Gayle Housworth 37 Leavenworth was jailed on a concealed weapon charge after being searched at a private club at the Virginia Inn. Yvonne Lee Albee Leavenworth was named winner of the youth fitness award at the 1976 American Junior Miss Pageant in Mobile.
