German forces fail to resume attacks on the Flanders and Picardy fronts as Allied lines hold firm. Reports indicate continued resistance and cautious offensives with no major breakthrough claimed by either side.
On May 7, Allied fronts faced intense artillery from German guns. More than 15 000 shells, mostly gas, struck American positions south of the Somme, yet no infantry attack followed. Canadian troops seized much of Arras sector while facing heavy shellfire. The article notes possible simultaneous German attacks on Flanders Arras and Amiens fronts, with the Allies holding strong. Across Kansas a vast draft requisition from Provost Marshal General Crowder calls 4,871 white and 242 black men. Douglas County is assigned 48 recruits, 40 white and 8 black, with 250 Class 1 men still awaiting selection and many deferred due to farming. Exemptions include Geary Hamilton Morton Republic Riley Scott and towns Junction City Belville Topeka.
The Cordley school Red Cross effort is stalled due to a shortage of sewing machines. More workers have joined, but there are not enough machines to match demand, and a campaign to raise funds for more machines is underway.
Washington May 7 Investigation of the aircraft situation rapidly formed as Attorney General Gregory began planning a federal inquiry into malfeasance or misuse of a 640 million dollar aviation appropriation. Senator Chamberlain vowed a thorough senate probe to find those responsible and to expose any failures in sending planes abroad and training cadets with limited or no aircraft available.
Rex Kendall, former Journal-World reporter, describes his army induction at Camp Funston. He details stripping for quarantine, box delivery of civilian clothes, and issued uniforms plus mess kit. He notes becoming acting corporal and leading a squad including three Lawrence youths as rest of unit joins the All-Kansas regiment after quarantine.
Oberlin resident Irving W. Metcalf spent two years in Lawrence twenty years ago to handle his cousin General Wicer S. Metcalf’s business during the Spanish American War. He recalls his brother’s resignation as a college professor to serve as an ambulance driver in France without pay, and notes he, at 48, remains the oldest in the department and has not fallen ill.
Active artillery fighting raged last night on both sides of the Avre southeast of Amiens. The war office announces continued combat with heavy shelling and exchanges between forces near the front.
The Lawrence school calendar was rearranged by the school board. Holidays from the H. S. list were adjusted to fit the new schedule.
Lawrence board of education approves forming an agricultural department and uses Y M C A facilities for physical training. it orders grounds and building committees to study suitable land for rental or purchase, add j mo palmer property for school use, and adopt a calendar adjustment with six day sessions and holidays trimmed. it also schedules the high school year to start september 16 1918 and ends may 28 1919 with breaks as noted.
Grant township Mr and Mrs Emil W Heck announce the birth of a daughter named Catherine Magdalena.
Weather summary shows yesterday evening 0.6 and today 0.68 with afternoon reading 65.0 and 82 for general temperatures. Forecast calls for clear to fair skies tonight and Wednesday with little temperature change.
The United States marshal in Topeka reports a Washington notice that the government plans soon to conduct registration of enemy alien women. Registration will be conducted in cities over 1000 population with postmasters supervising in smaller towns under police chief oversight.
Funeral services for Mr Wilder were held today at AQ Baptist Church with a large turnout of former employees and old friends. Music was provided by Mrs Frank Jennings and Mrs Rianne Cox, organist Mrs Paul Rankin, and Rev Frank Jennings offered remarks. Interment followed at Oak Falls beside his wife who passed away about two years ago. Deacons served as pallbearers.

The board of education met last night and the committee on teachers and salaries recommended contracts for janitors, employees, and additional teachers for the coming year. E K Crocker was named supervisor of buildings and grounds, with several new hires including Mrs Anna S Himoe and Mrs L M Flory. Additional teachers Eva Reetor Etta Smith Lucile Olthant Ruth Wood Josephine Camp White Rhea Cary Edith Wagner Lillian Fish and others were elected for the year.
The alumni board of visitors from KU plans its second inspection of the university this year on Wednesday. Members include CL Brown a 1896 graduate from Topeka and six other trustees Helen P Edwards W F Holloway Grace Wilkie R A Russell and John F Rendir from Pittsburg Great Bend Wichita and Kansas City. The board will report its findings before the June alumni meeting.
A Journal-World report notes Mes Thompson writes to her son Otto G. Thompson at Camp Funston, sending a pin and keeping ties with home. About a hundred copies of the store from Lawrence are daily sent to the Journal-World for soldiers.
The legislative committee will hold a meeting tomorrow at 3 PM in the Chamber of Commerce rooms. The session aims to discuss policy proposals and organizational matters.
