Lawrence residents joined a disaster relief drive on Wednesday to help tornado victims in Haysville and Wichita. Kansas University students Tariq Butt and Brandon Henderson helped launch the effort in the Hy-Vee parking lot at 3504 Clinton Parkway.
Lawrence mother Celeste Kraus and KU senior Tariq Butt organize a 24 foot Ryder truck filled with soap clothes and diapers for Wichita and Haysville tornado survivors. They set up a plywood sign in the Hy-Vee lot at 3504 Clinton Parkway and quickly receive generous donations from passersby.
Two days after a devastating tornado in Sedgwick County, Kansas, residents cope with cleanup. Damage estimates reach $140 million to $146 million with 8,480 homes and businesses affected, including 1,129 destroyed. Five dead and nearly 150 injured as Gov. Graves surveys Haysville and Wichita neighborhoods.
The U S Army will not alter its timetable to send Apache helicopters into combat against Serb forces after a nighttime crash in northeastern Albania killed two American aviators. The incident, the second in nine days involving Apaches deployed near Kosovo, prompts an investigation but officials say there is no delay or grounding of aircraft.

An Associated Press poll shows a majority support for tougher gun laws after Colorado school shootings. 51 percent favor stricter laws, 40 percent say parents should be charged for crimes by under 18 with a gun, with further questions on enforcement and age limits.
