Orphan train reunion in Kansas highlights riders' memories
At the Kansas Orphan Train Reunion in Great Bend, 80 year old Anita Sprout and Teresa Jessie Martin, both former riders, join 14 descendants to reflect on the orphan trains era from 1854 to 1929. The event honors the Orphan Train Heritage Society of America and traces the history of Charles Brace's system. Sprout recalls losing memory of her birth family while Martin, born in 1906, describes the loneliness of school and adoption.

KU geologists win grant to study rock deposition in shallow seas
Researchers from the Kansas Geological Survey and the University of Kansas received a National Science Foundation grant of 137000 dollars to study how rocks form in shallow seas. Evan Carl Franseen and Robert H. Goldstein lead the project focusing on carbonate limestone and dolomite in the Miocene of the Mediterranean. They aim to model deposition factors to aid oil and gas production and understand ancient climate and sea level changes.
