Britain faces growing calls for a tougher war effort as the Afridi destroyer is officially lost after German bombing near Narvik. Norway's garrison, Narvik’s fate, and Chamberlain's Commons appearance loom as press and opposition demand stronger leadership.
Berlin dispatch reports Adolf Hitler sending Alpine troops on a 200 mile mountain march from Mo toward Narvik to aid besieged German forces in Norway. British and French units push north from Namsos, facing 300 to 400 miles of rugged terrain. The German high command notes renewed British naval activity with a claimed sinking and mine incidents near Narvik.
The French admiralty announced that the destroyer Bison, 2436 tons with 209 crew, was sunk by German planes while escorting troop transports in the North Sea on May 3. A second Allied ship, the British destroyer Afridi, 1870 tons, was also sunk in separate raids. Families of victims informed.
Reports from Larvik say a German aircraft bombed and sank a submarine in the Skagerrak last Saturday. A German air raid off southeast England was repelled by Royal Air Force fighters and an earlier raider faced anti aircraft fire. Norwegian skier Einar Grottums braten was killed north of Oslo while others escaped. Topeka opens its new streamlined offices in the city hall segment of a $1.5 million auditorium complex.
Paris May 6 A German thrust on the western front crumpled under a sharp French counter in the Saar sector during fighting for the third successive night. The French high command said both sides suffered losses with French casualties described as slight and provided few details. About 300 Nazis moved to attack through no mans land but failed to penetrate east of the Maginot line and were forced to withdraw.
Three to four escapees from the Larned state hospital fled with two attendants and an armed Negro leader named Willis Grisco. They were last seen heading south toward Greensburg in a green 1936 Terraplane license 69 1000, with attendant Jack Rush briefly held hostage and supervisor Bill Barnes threatened with a knife.
State Auditor George Robb of Salina filed at the secretary of state office on May 6 for the Republican nomination to serve another term.
Premier Mussolini and Crown Prince Umberto discussed military issues as Italy and Yugoslavia tensions rose. Reports say Italy massed over 300,000 troops along the Fiume border amid alleged French British intrigues. Soviet quarters denied Balkan massing toward Ruthenia.
Washington May 6 The senate judiciary committee recommends acting this session on the Logan Walter bill to subject federal agency orders to court review. Barkley Ashurst urged action and a subcommittee will consider amendments. Also under discussion are silver purchases and crop insurance while fights shuffle over transfers of civil aeronautics authority to the commerce department.
The WPA in Douglas county plans a two week exhibit from May 20 to 25 led by county supervisor Mrs. W O Hamilton. Slogan This Work Pays Your Community. Robert Green a 29 year old from Houston Texas escaped from the Ford County jail in Dodge City early this morning after removing jail bars with a improvised wrench made from a mop brush and blankets He slipped out a window using a bed blanket rope ladder and has not been located Sheriff Claude Dowdy reported Green was being held on a school room burglary charge after serving a 60 day sentence at Garden City and was in jail awaiting transfer.

Alexandria May 6 A new squadron of allied cruisers and auxiliary warcraft arrived to join British and French ships in the Egyptian port. British officials said they are ready to meet Italy on land sea and air if needed with the answer to come after the test. Allied planes with heavy bomb cargoes were ready for quick takeoff as rear fleet moved into harbor.
More than 60 advisers including Lawrence business and professional men and University faculty will hold interviews with KU students May 14 to 23 during a campus Vocational Guidance Clinic. W T Markham will open with an address May 14 at 7 30 in Frank Strong auditorium.
In Topeka on May 6 the weather eased from extreme heat with clouds covering much of Kansas. Meteorologist D Flora said unsettled skies may bring thundershowers to southeastern counties, with more rain hoped for as topsoil dries. Temperatures peaked near 97 in several towns.
More than 40 000 officers and men of a defending blue army advance toward the Sabine river to defend against 30 000 invading red troops. The 70 000 men, about a third of the nation’s enlisted strength, will engage May 11 to May 25 for the training of the regional Third Army in America’s largest peace time troop maneuvers.
Gainesville May 6 Congressman Isa Acquitted Frak Welchel a Democratic representative from Georgia was acquitted in federal court on charges he conspired to sell postal appointments.
A masked robber at the Granada Theater last night secured about 646 in cash from receipts for Granada and Patee Saturday and Sunday. He threatened to shoot, forced cashier Miss Peggy Davis and manager Ray Holmes to open the safe, then fled with the money as police reviewed photos.
The index tracks 60 stocks with a 49.7 average. On Saturday the reading rose to 49.8 indicating a slight uptick.
Washington reports that Mexico rejects U S arbitration over oil properties as domestic in nature. Foreign Minister Eduardo Hay says arbitration conflicts with facts and contends Mexican law offers remedies. Sinclair interests reportedly agreed to a three year payment plan totaling 20,000,000 barrels of oil and 8 to 10 million dollars in cash.
The McLaughlin well on S McLeod farm northeast of McLouth found oil in the Mississippi lime at 1469 feet after muddy showings from the shale. The unit, begun April 18, may be acidized by Wednesday. if unsuccessful, operators will drill deeper for more oil or gas. The McLeod property was once Sen Matt Edmonds home. Miss Mary McLeod, granddaughter, attends KU business school.
Ten members of Kappa Phi sorority and Mrs. Robert A. Hunt attended a district meeting at Oklahoma A and M college in Stillwater. KU sent five delegates from Lawrence and other cities, with representation from Nebraska Oklahoma Hays Teachers Kansas State and the A and M colleges.
State American Legion commanders from Kansas and Missouri addressed the first district convention in Leavenworth. FE P Scrivner of Kansas City Kan and Suc Lozier of Jefferson City MO spoke as about 1600 Legion and auxiliary members attended the event which will conclude tonight.

Berlin May 6 reports say German planes spotted Allied detachments marching through Norwegian mountains toward Narvik where Allied forces besiege the town. Nazis aim to mop up units before aiding a garrison at the ore port and building an airport at Bodo for Stukas.
Lewis Troy a Negro entered a guilty plea to second degree manslaughter before Judge Hugh Means. He was sentenced to three to five years at hard labor for the fatal shooting of Earl H. Harris at Troy’s home. The murder charge was dismissed after the plea. The May term opened with civil docket proceedings and naturalization cases continued to July 6 for Ernest F. Kampschroeder Lecompton Robert Gunter and Jose Hidalgo Jr.

Giovanni Ansaldo editor of Il Telegrafo predicts a German invasion of England is not only possible but highly probable in the near future. He told Italy's armed forces that a major invasion effort by Germany is expected soon.
Karl Miller of Dodge City Kansas former Rotary International director was inducted into the Blackfeet Tribe in a colorful Great Falls ceremony. Fullblood participants included Chief Wadesin-the-Water Julia Wades-in-the-Water Night Gun Mrs Night Gun and Dirk Sanderville as hundreds of Rotary delegates gathered for Montana conference events and the 25th Rotary anniversary in the state.
In this morning's police court session four speeders paid $5 fines each: Dennis Stoswski, Albert Learned, Joe Kennedy, and Lee McGee. Stanley Sherman Jr forfeited a $40 bond for speeding. Robert Little and James Harris were fined $1 each for wrong working.
The forecast calls for generally fair conditions across most of Kansas tonight with considerable cloudiness in the north. Tuesday is expected to be mostly fair with scattered afternoon thunderstorms, especially in the extreme southeast, and the north may be warmer.
