Senator Bronson M. Cutting of New Mexico and three others perish when a TWA transport crashes near Atlanta Missouri in fog. The eastbound flight to Annapolis with a film unit injures nine, including Hollywood figures and Paramount staff, as fuel runs out short of Kirksville.
Witnesses recalled the plane tearing apart on approach to a pasture as seven injured were cared for in a living room until ambulances arrived. The pilot claimed fuel exhaustion and officials noted it was the airline’s first fatal crash on a scheduled flight since 1931.

London May 6 King George spoke by radio to the empire on his silver jubilee. The monarch rededicated himself to service of the British empire and appealed for aid for the sick and unemployed. He told the children to be prepared to give their country their services and hearts.

Senate hoped for a vote tonight, then recessed after news of Senator Cutting's airplane death. Harrison compromise defeated as drive for cash bonus intensifies. Administration chiefs weigh backing Patman hoping veto would be easier to sustain than Vinson plan.
London May 6 mass jubilee crowds celebrate King George V and Queen Mary 25 years on the throne. The royals kneel at St Pauls as thousands cheer, a communist banner torn from protestors near Ludgate Circus. banner later burned in Hyde Park as part of pageantry and devotion.
Chicago May 6 AM relief stations closed and treasuries exhausted leave unemployed families in 15 counties in actual suffering. County relief officials say local and private charities cannot cope with the crisis caused by the federal relief shutdown after the state failed to provide funds. Nine of ten counties reportedly exhausted commission funds though some counties still offer aid to the neediest. Hardest hit are families with a member on relief, with support dwindling two weeks ago to today leaving thousands with no resources.
Washington May 6 The Supreme Court held unconstitutional the entire rail retirement act affecting over a million employees. Justice Roberts delivered the ruling, voiding provisions taxing workers and carriers, and excluding only certain engaged in interstate commerce. The decision, 5 to 4, criticized the act as an improper regulation of commerce and noted pre passage service credits and recent retirees. Chief Justice Hughes dissented, calling the majority’s view a departure from sound commerce principles. President Roosevelt had signed the measure last June 30.

Assistant Labor Secretary Edward F McGrady said he would oversee the survey to decide if the company’s proposed terms are acceptable. In Flint, Buick workers also voted to delay strike action until Toledo poll results are known.
Post office staff kept up with a weekend mail surge as chain letters spread through Lawrence. Despite delays, 12 000 normal outgoing mails daily rose to about 22 000 for Friday and Saturday, with stamp sales reaching 50 000 cents last week. Chain letters attract many residents, including students, who skip classes to address letters and meet the postman.
Bryson Texas May 6 two bank robbers flee First State Bank firing. one man Austin Hawkins 35 killed others wounded unnamed. both bodies left injaw creek district as ambulance and sheriff work. Authorities say robbers wore overalls over suits and hid in a rooming house before the raid. Firearms and pursuit followed daylight.

Topeka May 6 Light sprinkles fell across southern Kansas over the weekend but did not moisten crops. A .12 inch at Dodge City and .10 inch at Liberal provided no relief, though federal meteorologist S. D. Flora said rain proves more is possible. He noted the area moved east and that no significant rainfall is expected for at least the next 36 hours. Temperatures likely to reach 70s in the day with 40s to 50s at night across eastern and western Kansas, Garden City reporting a light freeze.
