Rain aids cleanup of McLouth diesel spill at BP station
Emergency crews from Jefferson and Douglas counties responded to a diesel spill at the BP station in McLouth when a storage tank overflowed at 101 E. Lake St. About 1,500 gallons leaked, with two homes evacuated due to odor. Haz Mat Response Inc. led the cleanup using dispersants, water, peat moss, and vac trucks. Continuous moss coverage will last four to five days as soils are assessed. The moisture helped prevent deeper soil contamination, marking the county’s largest diesel spill.

Lawrence pavement projects hit city roads this week
Lawrence announces a series of traffic projects this week. An 8.43 mile stretch of Kansas Highway 10 will narrow to one lane each direction from I 70 Lecompton to US 59 for resurfacing with delays up to 15 minutes. Iowa Street from Bob Billings Parkway to Irving Hill Overpass reopens with single-lane traffic and detours via 23rd and Sixth streets. Nicklaus Palmer Hogan Drives see concrete work with possible closures. A new traffic signal at 23rd Street and O’Connell Road supports the Farmland Industries site development. Kansas River bridges work limits traffic to one 12 foot lane per span and 25 mph. Ninth Street from Delaware to Pennsylvania closes for reconstruction through July 20. U S 56 near Baldwin City closes in both directions with a 30 mile detour. Maple Leaf Festival target mid October completion.
