Tainted Rampart convictions rise in LA review
More than 80 convictions have been tossed with six more dismissed as the Los Angeles Rampart corruption probe expands. Judge Larry Fidler noted the harm of imprisoning innocent people while city officials review 234 cases as officers allegedly falsified reports beat and framed suspects. Russell Newman, who served seven years of a 12 year cocaine sentence, was among those overturned after discredited ex-officer Rafael Perez testified.

White House counsels deny e mail cover up
Former White House counsel Charles Ruff acknowledged he failed to pursue an e mail breakdown vigorously enough to ensure compliance with subpoenas but denied any cover up. He cited possible technological ignorance and said a quick check showed Lewinsky emails had been supplied in paper form. A June 18 1998 study found over 246 000 electronic messages not captured by the automated system. Ruff stated staff did not conceal delay or alter document production.
